Diffenbachia question

I have a diffenbachia that has a large stem, @ 1.5 inches, and is doing something I haven't seen before. The plant has 4 new shoots growing out of the same center. I guess they are new leaves, but I have never seen multiple shoots before. Is this common?

Well part of my question has been answered. One of the shoots opened as a flower... I didn't realize Diffenbachia did that. Another shoot is looking like a leaf. Also, I did fertilize a few months back.
