I came across this term the other day while looking up cultivation info for some Davallia species. I was curious what specifically was meant and have had little luck finding any sort of definition, sensible or otherwise. My best guess is that this relates to the porosity of the soil??? I believe it relates to the porosity of the soil or, to look at it from the other end, to the soil aggregation. When the size of soil aggregates is large there is a lot of "open" space in between for water movement and oxygen exchange, hence the term "open soil".
