Is there a source where I can find if a particular plant or shrub is deer resistant? I specifically want to know if Fothergilla and Clethra are resistant to black tail deer.

Such lists are, in my opinion, of limited value, since if hungry enough or curious enough deer will sample virtually anything. They do seem to have their favorites & not so favorites however, and you can find many such lists posted on the internet & in books. My one specific recommendation in this regard is to stay away from plants in the rose family.

Put up a deer fence or get a dog that chases them away, you can't count on anything else.
