Has anyone had experience with Euryops and Callicarpia with respect to resistance to deer browsing? Thanks.
Euryops and Callicarpa make a great buffet for the deer! Try plants that have a fuzzy/hairy leaf or a relatively strong fragance. Goods choices include such shrubs as Choisya ternata (Mexican Mock Orange), Senecio greyi 'Sunshine' (sometimes sold as Brachyglottis) which produces bright yellow daisy-like flowers in 6 inch clusters, Fremontodendron 'California Glory', Cistus (most varieties), Lavender, Lavatera (Tree Mallow), and Rhodos (most of the time). This plants can be found at any reasonably stocked nursery or home improvement store. Just remember that deer aren't always that picky and a hungry deer will eat almost any plant. Just remember to be patient because gardening with deer is a mix of luck and trial and error. Best of luck! -Eric
Bucks will also trash plants with their antlers that aren't being eaten. You really need to fence deer out to not be under constant attack, even then you are gardening in a sort of fortress under siege, beyond which many of your plants may not be able to venture.
