I have some seeds from my Granmother's garden for a flower she always called Touch Me Nots. They come in various colors and have seed pods that burst open when touched. They reseed very easily so she had them for many years. My seeds are from last years garden and I'd like to know if these are something that would be readily eaten by deer. My only sunny location to plant these would be at the top of our driveway and the deer are always roaming uo there. They have always eat our daylilies, hydrangeas, mulberry tree, and many other plantings. Any suggestions on the real name of these flowers so I can look them up and learn something about their care. I live in GA and it's getting close to time to sow these seeds. (Sorry, no pics.)Thanks for your help in advance. Sincerely, timirain
In the Vancouver, BC, area a rather common weed (escaped flower) in wet areas is Jewelweed, or Japanese Touch-Me-Not, Impatiens balfourii, I think. Aside from forcibly ejecting ripe seeds when touched, it is easily recognized by its distinctive smell and its orchid-like flowers. In eastern North America, Impatiens capensis might be more common. Check the Web for pictures.
Thanks! I looked at the pictures in the link and that is the same plant (Impatiens balsamina). Do you know if the deer like to eat them?
