I have a little leaf linden tree in my backyard that is rapidly declining in health. It's planted in heavy clay soil and has been attacked by a borer insect of some kind. The borer damage is quite high on the tree - in the area of the first branch. The tree was planted 3 summers ago and was from nursery stock. The tree has small curled leaves and just looks sickly overall. Can this tree be saved? I've fertilized it this year and am considering giving it an insecticidal drench early next spring to protect it from further attack. I'm also considering amending the soil around the tree with compost and coarse sand to improve the soil quality. Should I start over with another tree or can this one be saved?
