Thanks.Re colours..looking ok so far..changing quickly..it’s not cold yet!! 5-20 years in the photos. Several have grown very quickly..all in pots
The emerald lace in the photo never went red this year..just not enough sun..that has grown like a monster in 10 years..it’s about 7 foot across..
@dicky5ash good morning R. This would be an ideal thread for the Maples forum of Autumn colour of 2021 it has been suggested. Do you mind if I add 2021 to the tile and show this on the Cheering ourselves up with maples thread. D
Happy to repost here Acer Rubrum Sun Valley Little Princess Omure Yama Peaches and Cream Hopefully there'll be more to follow in the coming weeks.
A "few" seedlings just beginning to turn to their Autumn colours, and an Acer davidii in the foreground :
Good evening everyone. It's really nice to be back amongst my trees, they have been neglected somewhat this past two months. So here are a few that are turning today. I have some Spring colours also on my Aconitifolium, so weired!! These are Koyasan, Osakasuki, Crimson Queen, Aconitifolium, Viridis, Ishu shidare, Purple ghost,Anne Irene, Uncle ghost, Zaaling,Manyo no sato, and Matsukaze. D
Acer buergerianum : the one in a plastic pot hasn't been repotted for, I think, 3 or 4 years; the one that I'm training as a "root-over-rock" bonsai was repotted 2 years ago. I put it next to a "non-identified" palm/oenum from seed to show the difference in colours at this time of the year : 'Como' : Shirasawanum 'Aureum' with one yellow leaf : 'Atropurpureaum dissectum' : And I can't resist, once again, while it lasts, this shirasawanum "x sp." or whatever is really stunning. I've rarely ever seen such vibrant, flashy colours :
When I collected about 60 seeds (not all of them viable) on my 'Hana matoi', I spotted this ladybird/ladybug. There are black dots on the leaves that look like invitations for her dinner: Coccinelle asiatique — Wikipédia Harmonia axyridis - Wikipedia
A random branch on a young self-sown Norway Maple sapling here. Pics from 31 August, and 11 October, respectively. Incredible it has retained this intense colour for 6 weeks, and that the rest of the sapling is still green.
Makes me wonder if the early senescence is a prelude to the maple jettisoning this branch... looks great though...
I doubt it signals the branch is about to be jettisoned as a simple overdose of auxin is a way to induce this. Sometimes, just girdling a branch is enough to cause the foliage to redden, but dusting freshly exposed cambium with percentage-strength IBA is a sure-fire way to make this happen.
Same here. The way it goes for me is: leaves assume autumn colour early => bark changes colour => branch is compartmentalised => branch is dry and dead as toast. Takes a while for the whole scenario to play out but when you are used to it you can see it coming. Just not sure if NM follow the same process as JM. Starting to see some autumn colour now in a couple of trees, will have to try and get some pics soon...
Autumn colors are starting to appear on the smaller trees! My preferred time of the year! Thinking of going to Westonbirt or Batsford arboretums in about 2 weeks time :) A few of the small maple trees have already lost their leaves, before even showing colors.. :( Orangeola. All the leaves have turned on that one. I've got a slightly bigger (not shown) one that still has its summer colors (only a few leaves are starting to turn). Sango Kaku. Fully yellow. (The other two have orange colors and green colors).. Quite a difference between them Koto No Ito. Yellow leaves starting to show up! Butterfly Acer Palmatum, when fully turned the leaves are of a nice deep orange color Acer Palmatum Seedlings (from this year), some have nice red autumn colors
Seiryu: Grown from seed: Wou nishiki: Sango kaku early days still: Kinran: Shigitatsu sawa, atypical branch:
