I have a crabapple tree that has a damaged trunk. The central core of the tree is exposed about 1/3 of the way around. should I cut the tree down now or will it survive? I have enlcosed a link to a picture of the trunk. http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=fu5bex&s=3 Let me know what you think I should do with this tree. The trunk is about 3 inches diameter.

It will survive. Bark loss around all the tree is fatal but 1/3 will eventually grow back & the tree shouldn't suffer too much in the meantime.
