a couple years ago the deer used the tree to rub velvet off and the bark was scraped off on one side. I added protection, but noticed this spring that the wound had formed a cavity and the bark and underlayer had become shaggy and orange colored. Is this insect infestation or is it a disease and what can I do?

If it has a big hollow that is not closing over tree may be a loss.

It's not huge, but I can see the centre of the trunk through the 1" (approx) cavity. Thanks for the reply
