We have a young apple tree (about 2 yrs old) that has been very attractive to our local squirrels. Unfortunately one was trying some acrobatic tricks and managed to partially snap the main leader about 1 foot from the top - it's about 5 ft tall. It's snapped half way across so it's still connected on one side. We've been able to straighten it and support it above the injury but I'm not sure the best thing to do. Should we just trim it below the snap or try to repair it somehow? Thanks!
I would head it back to the closest bud. Did you pruning it back the first year ? this is a good guide on how to prune apple trees http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_veg_diary/fruit_veg_mini_project_september_2d_apple.asp http://www.eap.mcgill.ca/CPTFP_7.htm
Thanks for the excellent links. The squirrel obviously knew more about apple tree pruning than I did! I'll get pruning in December
