after a snowfall of more than two feet my maple showed a very large split. it starts between the top two branches and goes at least twelve inches on the main trunk.can it be saved?

here in the PNW we get a lot of heavy snow fall that damages the trees, in most cases when the tree splits it is best to try and cut off the weak side branch or branching so to provide the tree with a nice clean place to heal.

Weepers are typically strong growers so in a few years you should get branching to cover up the missing branches. On trees where the damage is quite noticable and ugly, I have found it is not bad to dig the tree up and replant it so as to hide the damage.
