I found a beautiful border, full of dahlias, in a park in Somerset. Now, I know that there are simply thousands of dahlia cultivars and that attempting to ID the following might prove difficult (or even impossible!). But here's hoping that someone will know some of them, or at least give me a head start on searching myself. Scientific name preferred, but I'll take what I can get, too!

Thank you very, very much in advance, :-)

Unless there is a Dahlia grower that use these form, you are asking almost the impossible. There are probably several named cultivars that look like each pic. Some may be 6ft tall others 18". An expert would need to know so much more.

This may or may not be the Dahlia in your pic 4.

Dahlias can be separated into different catagories. eg Pom pom, ball, Incurved cactus.
May I suggest you visit a local show where they have a competition for Dahlias. There you will learn a lot about the different shape flowers, which is the starting point.

I was afraid of that. How common/likely is it for a park to have records of what it has planted?

I should maybe have mentioned that someone may have been growing them for years and have just been chosen by a grower who just liked the shape/colour and they do not have a name.... other than Dahlia.
An additional problem with ids from pics, is the size of the flowers... 2"or 6" across. Also, the accuracy of the subtle colour differences,to even begin to compare with a known named variety.
