This is the first year I plan to overwinter my dahlia tubers here in White Rock, BC. Today (Sunday 22/Nov) I dug them up. My understanding is I should split either now or in the Spring where "the eyes" are ... so far while cleaning I haven't seen them. What do you guys do? I will store in a plastic bag with dry cedar chips in the storage room after clipping the growth you still see on them.
I would be careful about the plastic bag as storage — I would think it might increase risk of rot and mould etc I like the idea of clean dry sawdust The experts on here might have input on the sawdust (ie untreated hardwood vs fir or pine or cedar... def not sawdust fr manufactured wood (plywood for eg) Edit to add - watch out for rodent damage in your shed Edit to add - perhaps some info on this site (Certainly lots of inspiration!) Bulletins - Vancouver Dahlia Society And info from the mothership It’s nearly time to store your tubers – The American Dahlia Society
I just looked at the pictorial instructions for overwintering and surprised some people do like plastic bags (but no mice!) https://www.dahlia.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Processing-tubers-pictorial.pdf
We use an air compressor to clean dahlia tubers from soil. Then no drying is necessary after cleaning. Of course you must be gentle with tubers - they can be damaged with too aggressive cleaning.
