Photographed this plant on a recent visit to Moody Gardens in Galveston, TX. I don't often see this species in fruit so thought people might be interested.
So I take it these don't make cones, like Encephalartos ? (please excuse my ignorance... just learning)
Cycas revoluta is dioecious, that is male and female reproductive parts are on separate plants. Like other cycads they do make cones. In my experience, the male cones are tall and borne upright, so look like cones. The female cones are sort of low and roundish and look more like a halo than a cone.
Yep, they're cones in the photo, just highly modified cones. Same way as e.g. yew "berries" are actually highly modified cones.
