I have a hop tree in my yard and I am considering trimming 1 of the main branches off. My other option is tying the branches together until the tree gets to be taller. I just don't like the way it is growing now. I will add photos below. I was going to cut the branch on the right side off and stake the remaining main trunk so it will grow straight. Any suggestions would be helpful...

I would cut off the main branch on the right side, as well as the shorter branch below it and stake the remaining branch, as you suggest. Tying the branches together will just produce an even weaker joint between the two.
