I've been told this is a currant plant. It produces berries that my grandma used to make great pies with. I brought 3 of these from the old family farm in Oklahoma to my home in Houston. This one is holding on but not prospering, the other 2 are half wilted all the time.
    1) Can someone tell me what type of currant this is?

    2) Can you give me any suggestions or can you point me to resources as to how to keep these plants alive and to allow them to prosper in the steamy Houston climate?

I am keeping them watered and in a shady area.
    Thanks,
    Fred

May be hopeless in your area. As for identification, what color are the currants?

The berries look like blackberrys and are red turning to dark blue or purple when ripe, semi sweet

So it doesn't look like these currants?

Might need to post a photograph to identify it first.

Here is a photo of one of the plants. There are no berries, they are sapplings.

Probably clove currant. Early, yellow flowers that smell of cloves (carnations)?

Yes, yellow flowers, and the berrys are actually small round and purple. Looks like a match, thanks!

Sunset NATIONAL GARDEN BOOK will have climate zone information, if you want to see if there is one of these around you can look at. Otherwise T.A.M.U. Hort. may be able to help.
