I have a Gingko biloba that is approx. 45' - 50' high. It is situated in a relatively small backyard, and it beginning to get very wide and very open. Would heavy pruning (tip pruning main limbs back 30%-40%) have any adverse effects on the health or structure of the tree. Perhaps it should be left as is. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Yes: It would wreck it.

There should be little cause for concern, unless this specimen is showing alarming signs like leaning over or cracking. After the Great Gale in Britain it was observed that the ginkgo was one of the tree species that pretty much did not blow over anywhere in the affected area.
