Crosne (Stachys affinis) http://www.durgan.org/URL/?EHYNO 24 August 2009 Crosne All plants are doing well. No underground tubers are forming yet. They require a long growing season, but can withstand much cold weather. http://www.durgan.org/URL/?CBDDK Summary: Crosne (Stachys affinis) 2009
Did you leave them outdoors over last winter? I received my tubers last fall, planted them in 5 gallon pots about 4" deep, and mulched the pots with a few inches of shredded leaves. Not one grew! However, I saved about 1 pound of them in my fridge (which actually went down to -20C briefly while I was away due to power outage mid winter!!!) and they all sprouted and are growing well. I am confused as to their hardiness. I suppose potted tubers was looking for trouble (brought them into a zone 4 or 4-5? Hmm.
Here is how I preserved my seed stock. http://www.durgan.org/URL/?CBDDK Summary: Crosne (Stachys affinis) 2009
Crosne is great for pickling. I am currently experiementing pickling with my surplus cucumbers. Will move on to crosne after this.
