Did you leave them outdoors over last winter?

I received my tubers last fall, planted them in 5 gallon pots about 4" deep, and mulched the pots with a few inches of shredded leaves.
Not one grew! However, I saved about 1 pound of them in my fridge (which actually went down to -20C briefly while I was away due to power outage mid winter!!!) and they all sprouted and are growing well.

I am confused as to their hardiness. I suppose potted tubers was looking for trouble (brought them into a zone 4 or 4-5? Hmm.
