Hi there, I planted a crimson queen in a somewhat sheltered area, I wanted to put it as close the the porch/house as possible without being too close, Im now wondering if it will be too close. I put it about 4' from the house and 3' from the walkway to the front door. I put it in about a month ago and figure if Im going to move it I should this fall and then leave it alone. I felt pretty good about its position but, most literature I read says 1 to 2 meters but some says up to 3. Whats the largest you guys have seen as far as old queens. Also I kind of think having a harder winter will produce a smaller tree in the long run.?Thank you

I had an Everred that I had planted 2ft from the house and 2.5ft from a walkway it was about 2ft tall and wide when we planted it. We had a nice climat and never any winter dieback. In about 3 years it had filled in against the house and I had pruned long chutes yearly. By the year it had reached the walk, again with regluar long chute pruning.

So with that said, you can make it work there and shorter seasons and colder winters will help. They are easy to prune and I would give it a try. I have found that maples are pretty easy to move in the first two years. By the 3rd year the roots have got a good hold. Also, you won't see maximum growth for a few years. So slow growth initially will not represent the actual growth rate of the established tree. It is worth a try.

People use dissectums in planting sites like you have all the time. If it is thoughtfull pruned, it can makea beautiful specimen. If you aren't comfortable pruning maples, then it might give you some trouble in the future. I would say 5 years before you have much to worry about, and even then, it is nothing you can deal with. I found it easy to keep mine off the walkway, but against the house was always a challenge.

What USDA Zone? In Wisconsin perhaps the principal issue will be getting it to survive.

I am in 5a. Alot of nurseries carry this variety with 1-2 year warrenty so Im pretty sure they can do well with proper placement, that being said it is well protected from wind and has some early morning shade and late shade at the end of the day.
As far as pruning what is the method? I would assume it would be to train by just taking of the tips if the farthest reaching branchs, not heavy (taking off limbs) or structural pruning.
