Can anyone tell me what might be the issue with my Crimson King Maple? I have 21 maples (4 species) on my property and just this one has the issue. The tree went into bud but will not leaf out. The others are in full bloom and are healthy. I picked one bud and it just fell apart - there was a small green worm in it? I picked another one and it too, just fell apart but no worm. These were not too dry. I do not want to pick more than I need to and hope someone can help. I am in zone 5, the trees are on a drip line with full sun exposure. I have had these for three years and they are 3" + caliper.
As well, it appears I have 'frost crack' or the like, on a Blaze. There are several small cracks but one rather large...4" by 2". It is dry inside and there doesn't seem to be any insect activity or sap. Should I just leave it be or wrap that portion? It seems to be getting larger each year. The 'installation expert' staked all these trees initially but we removed them after the first year.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Sounds like it died. The other could, in fact be getting cracked open by winter cold.

That is what my husband thought too....it did seem a bit behind the others in growth as well. About the large crack, should I put anything on it to aid in future years? I understand this is somewhat normal in the reds. Thank you in advance!

A saving grace indeed! Remove the dead 'Crimson King', and replace it with something less invasive and light-sucking black.
