Hello to everyone! I am new to this forum but I have been following it in the past. I live in Italy and I am trying to identify some maples of my area. I have not studied botanic or biology: for me it's easy to identify a maple but it's quite difficult to say which kind of maple is. So I decided to make some pictures and to post the on this forum, since you are more expert than me. These are three leaves of three different maples. I hope someone can help me. Thanks!
The second is A. platanoides, the Norway maple, probably 'Crimson King' or 'Crimson Sentry.' The third is A. saccharinum I think, (Silver maple) but there is a fair amount of variation and I might have it wrong. The first is more problematic, probably impossible to identify exactly from this single leaf, but likely some form of A. cappidocicum, perhaps ssp divergens or ssp tricaudatum. -E
2 and 3 i agree with Emery,if under leaves of 3, is grey/silver, is 100% acer saccharinium ,1 i vote pictum if this leaves is from one private garden ,if from pubblic park maybe cappadocicum...
is very easy the identification the different between liquidambar and acer ,is the fruit a little spherical for liquidambar , a small helicopter for maples;)
And if you don't have the fruits to look at, liquidambar has alternate buds, maples have opposite buds. -E
Agree with Danc, Liquidambar styraciflua for #1. Note the finely serrated margin; maples with 5-lobed leaves like this (A. cappadocicum, A. pictum) have smoothly entire margins.
