Sold as a 1G....I did not mess with the roots at all prior to planting. When I planted it, it came out as a 4" liner......but I was not planning to do anything for one season. This was a rare HTF cultivar, so my plan was to grow it for one season and then deal with root correction with it the following year after a full growing season.

Plant has been on a slow decline since leaf out....Naguri Nishki.
I dug it up today and decide to root wash it....to see what I was working it.

Looks like it was in a 4" Liner for far too long. 3 thick roots, and a massive root bound 4" liner shape.
Strong steady hose of the root ball enough to fill up 5 gallon bucket...
Even after all that rinsing, it's one solid 4" liner shaped of root profile.
A few roots that are sticking out past the rectangle shape....I suspect these are the new roots grown from March-Now. But nothing I could tease out.

The plant is stressed so I didn't even consider taking a knife to -sipe- it

I ended up inoculating with Myco and potted it and put it in a shady corner.

It definitely is going to a bare root tease, some serious cutting... next February (if the plant survives this season).

I suspect it's the same with my Hoshi Yadori, but Hoshi had a different issue. Planted too too....Seconday roots about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom of the leader. These secondary roots were growing more vigorously than the ones on the bottom. I *did* bite the bullet. I did snip the secondary roots in March but sofar....Hoshi is not struggling and does appear healthy and not stressed I snipped the larger roots it had and I left it with the smaller ones which were at the correct level

Comes with the territory of mail - order I suppose and this e-retailer was the only one that had these 2 cultivars available
