Do you have to till up the area where you are going to plant sweet corn?
I have a plot that is pretty large, I was hoping to save on labor. Is it possible
    or should it be tilled?

I think it would depend on the condition of the plot. If the ground is fairly soft - that is not hard packed - then you could probably get away with not tilling. Corn has quite vigorous roots as well as support roots that emerge later on in the year and I'm sure they would have no problem in a light soil.

it is definately not hard packed, it used to be a horse pen and right now it is quite soft and mushy because of all the rain. I don't remember it ever being hard packed.

Then you will probably be okay to just rake it over a bit and plant the corn.
