Corkscrew leaves with seeds?

    We found this sprig in a southwest Florida rookery and have no idea what it is. It's about 5 inches long with what appear to be black & white seeds.
    The people that work at the rookery were no help. Any ideas?

    I received an additional clue from my wife: this sprig was plucked off of a tree.
