I have a 6 year old corkscrew hazel that has developed scale-like lesions on it's branches. The seem to follow in very evenly spaced out lines. Branches that are the worst seem to be dying. Does anyone know what this is, and if so, how do I treat it?

(My husband is rubbing his hands together in anticipation of it's demise. He has already marked the spot out for a Japanese Maple.)

Gayle--the evenly spaced lines sound like the filbert blight lesions. Have a look at this site and see if it looks familiar

The copper spraying for it is probably in this site as well.
