I've convinced a friend of mine to convert a section of his back yard into an organic garden, but I'm not positive about the best way to go about doing it. My current plan is to set up a basic framework around the space and fill it with a decent amount of organic compost and soil and then to cover the whole shebang with a thick layer of organic mulch. Will this be enough to smother the grass and possible weeds out of existence or will they make their way through? Would a thick layer of newsprint on the grass make a difference or do I need an entirely new approach altogether? Thanks!

I have a "lasagna garden." There are no borders around it. No fertilizers are used.

Lay newspaper onto the grass. Then alternate with many layers of compost and soil. It heats up really well. My plot has grown the biggest vegetables that I have seen.

My Mother and Grandfather were both great gardeners and farmers. Their vegetables were never this vibrant and giving.
