I was told at the place where I bought my plants that astilbes as well as potentillas can handle the shade,no problem, but they died on me. Can they in fact do well in the shade?

Particulary in a hot summer climate astilbes may be best in shade. They definitely must be kept moist. Herbaceous potentillas are mostly sun-loving. Otherwise there are degrees of shade from light to heavy, with plants varying in how much shade they tolerate or require. And other factors affect results of shade plantings, such as what is providing the shade and how that may affect the growth of the plants put in the shadow of the building, fence, arbor, trees or shrubs that are casting the shadows.
