What are some good methods you folks have experimented with when composting things like hard woody stems (rose stems, corn stalks etc).

Without mechanical break down (ie grinding) what would be the most effective way of breaking this down into a usable poo based fertilizer?

my thoughts were using fungi first (i am currently experimenting with some wild mushrooms and also oyster mushrooms), then letting other organisms eat at it.

    any thoughts?
