I have a small Sangu Kaku in a small bed about 6ft x 4ft and I would like some ideas for companion plants that will stay relatively short so as not to obscure the coral bark. the tree is planted in a fairly sunny area that gets full sun until about 3pm.

Acer palmatum 'Aoyagi' with its bright green bark is recommended as a companion plant for Sango Kaku
Otherwise one of the small leafed hebes? and keep them trimmed to size?

I've just planted A. rufinerve Erythrocladum between 2 Sango kakus. The bright yellow bark makes an amazing contrast. I am also noticing a distinct red flush as it the sap is rising.

Aoyagi seems to be the traditional suggestion.

Anything bluish or silvery looks good with both the winter stem and fall leaf color of this tree.
