My mother, who lives with us, has often said she would like to try to grow a fig tree. We live in south Vancouver BC. Recently we have been offered a fig tree by a nieghbor. All we have to do is plant it. It will first have to be dug up from the nieghbor's yard where I am told it is not getting enough light. I doubt it is very large and is likely large enough to carry by one person. It is said to have fruit that is not ripening (due to lack of enough sunlight) is this possible?

Would this tree be likely to survive a transplant and if so, when would be the best time to do so?

    and

Does it require a certain length of direct sunlight to produce fruit?
Will it provide a crop of figs worth eating each year in the Vancouver climate.

If the tree is not likely to produce edible fruit each year and if it will have problems with low temperatures then we may decide not to accept it.

    Any advice welcome!

You should be able to grow it in a sunny spot, preferably against a south-facing wall. But if it is a variety that does not mature well in Vancouver there is no point in planting it on your place.
