Found this Comfrey growing in a Nature Preserve a while ago. Leaves are very large, over 2ft long. Does anyone know the species?

    Thanks

Looks like Symphytum officinale or its hybrid, Symphytum x uplandicum.

Thanks. At least it's one or the other. Is there a way to differentiate between S. officinal and S. x uplandicum?

This particular site says that S. x uplandicum differns in "that its stems are only slightly winged and the stalks of the upper leaves only run a small distance down the stems". While other sources mention that S. x uplandicum is slightly more hairy. The problem is that I find these kind of relative and since S. x uplandicum readily backcrosses to S. officinale, there might be a lot of plants with intermediate characteristics. Although someone else might be able to tell them apart with certainty.

Good info. Thanks. I will have to take another look at it to see how far the wings go down the stem. As you can see in the photos, it has very large leaves with prominent veins as for S. x uplandicum. Unfortunately, it's not in flower anymore so I can't use that for an ID.
