    Sobralia sp.

    It should look like my attached when the blooms are fully open. I´m curious: do yours smell faintly of vanilla, or is it just the one roadside species down here?

    Thanks very much for the ID. It´s growing overhead and I can´t reach it ti take a wiff. I will keep an eye on the blooms. Yours looks very impressive.

    It's not "mine" strictly speaking. They're roadside weeds in the provinces of Pastaza and Morona down here; I was just opportunistic on a hike. There are white-flowered ones, but they're not as common as the purple ones.
