Early this year I began germinating some sunflower seeds. The variety is Autumn Beauty. Well, most of them are probably about 6-7 feet tall. Most of them have bloomed or are blooming, too. The blooms are absolutely gorgeous. But! I would like to collect seeds from them. I'd like to know the process of harvesting the seeds so I can grow them next year. Thanks! Lakota
This sounds like a great idea. Sunflowers are a very good plant choice for seed saving for the home gardener. Autumn Beauty is a blend of varieties, so it will come back as a nice blend of flowers in your garden. Here are a few links about seed saving. The first has specific info on sunflowers. http://www.perc.ca/PEN/1998-05-06/s-cleary.html http://www.gardenline.usask.ca/yards/collecti.html http://www.seedysaturday.ca/seed-saving.htm
Great! Thanks! I just checked on my sunflowers and there's two heads that have dropped all of their petals and I can see seeds beginning to grow on the heads. I'm really excited! Thanks again for the help! Lakota
