Anyone out there still growing collard greens? These are the most wonderful plants in the world to grow. We have had about 12 of them, growing since the beginning of summer, we keep harvesting the lower leaves and harvesting and harvesting. These plants have kept two families in all the collard greens that anyone could ever want to eat. They actually look like brussels sprouts, but no sprouts. I understand that these collards are the most beneficial of the "greens" that we shoud all be eating. I actually watched a movie a couple of weeks ago, and (it was an oldie), and the Mother was cooking collards. Hmm....guess these have been wonderful greens for a long time. I only have come to know them in the recent years, thanks to the knowledge of my Sister, who convinced me to try them. I actually thought at first that they were rather strong tasting and gross, but I have grown to crave this vegie. It is the same as cilantro, I hated that years ago, but find now that I crave this as well. My brother-in-law keeps making Salsa for me to try, and it always has cilantro, I now love it. The collard greens are actually more tasteful than the wonderful Swiss Chard, that we all know and love. These plants are a beautiful thing to look at, (if you like to look at greens), they bring the imagination of the soul to the forefront. Enjoy your collards!!!!
Kale is another wonderful vegetable to grow. It is very nutritious and tastes so much better fresh from the home garden. In this area you can keep plants through much of the winter.
