I have a climbing Climatis and it was doing well, not the leaves are all browning and dying and I dont know why? It is out in the sun, could it be getting to much sun or waht?
Might be clematis wilt. Fungus disease spread by spores, and can affect a plant very quickly. The foliage dries and withers and may turn black---it can kill of a few stems or all the foliage. Worst in damp, humid conditions and esp. with a plant with lots of densely tangled foliage. Good news is that it does not get into the roots, so there is hope for your vine. Cut off all the affected foliage and do NOT put it into a compost pile! Get rid of it all, and keep the plant watered. In the fall remove all the foliage so that the fungus does not overwinter in it and start up again next year. Good luck to you and your clematis!
you know I planted it near a pond garden, maybe the pond is giving it to much moisture? It really was growing well then it just withered and most of it died except near the root, so you may be right about that. I have another climbing plant next to it, it has blue grape like flowers it was small when I got it but it does seem to be growing very well compared to the Climantis, maybe that is what I should stick with. I would love to add pictures but cant tell if it downloads right. I Have pictures of my pond garden on facebook, but for some reason I cant seem to get it to post hear.
Clematis Wilt seems to be almost a given on numerous large-flowered hybrid clematis here. Small-flowered hybrids and pure species do not seem to so prone.
