Why doesn't my lemon or grapefruit tree bloom. The lemon tree is about 8 years old and the grapefruit tree I started from seed about 15 years ago. Both are in large pots and have been pruned to standard. They are outside (Oxford Mississippi) during the summer and protected in the winter. The winter temperature does not go below freezing during the winter. They are kept well watered during the summer.
Citrus trees grown from seed require a number of years to reach maturity, 7-10 years for lemons and grapefruits. Pruning will delay the maturation process according to the node count theory of development. This question has been posted a number of times in the past in the Citrus forum. Most dealt with grapefruit but the discussions would still be relevant. The forum's search function can be used to retrieve them. A number of posters have reported finally seeing their trees flower after many years so there's hope.
