When working around these plants i occasionally come up against one of the spikes. The spot on the skin the spike touches in itchy for about half an hour. Is there any lasting problem?

I have a similar problem with any thorny plant, including roses. Unless you are specifically allergic to the plant in question, I doubt there is any lasting ill effect, but it sure can make you itchy for awhile. I try to wear long sleeves and gloves to avoid getting scratched or stabbed, but if I do, I just take some antihistamine and it will go away.
