I have to confess that I'm not really into bonsai and I think they know it because I was given a Chinese Elm about six months ago, then watched the leaves turning yellow and falling off until there was nothing left. In desperation I stuck it in the garden and decided to let it become a tree. It has now thrived and is a mass of leaves, but my question is this: it is now November, so will a Chinese Elm survive outdoors in Britain during the winter months? It is quite close to a south-facing rough stone wall and gets whatever sun is going, which is not all that great.

Yes, no problem. It'll make a small to medium-sized tree; the UK champion is 15m tall, but they rarely get much over 10m.

Excellent. Thank you. So we can say that at 10 inches it still has a long way to go - if I leave it put and don't try to "rescue" it.

Those are totally hardy here in Canada in a zone 4. They grow like weeds...... as they say.
