A couple of years ago, we had a chestnut tree removed. Unfortunately, they left the stump behind. Now, around the base, shoots repear. Each time, I pull them out I spray with Round Up. I'm getting tired of doing so. Is there a way to kill this tree without having to go through a major expense as we only rent our house.
PN--the roundup only works when it's sprayed on the leaves and stems. This is a great time of year to spray, coz the leaves will be sending a lot of stuff down into the roots preparing for winter (cp. in the spring when the movement is pretty well all upwards, so the herbicide doesn't get into the roots as much). I would spray those shoots now, and just leave them for at least a week to get all the effect possible on the roots.
