Hello all, I need some help on planting a Evans Cherry at this time of year in Spruce Grove Alberta just west of Edmonton. The soil in my yard under the 6 inches of topsoil I added to the new lot is mainly clay. Can anyone give me advice on how to amend the soil and if it is still a good time to plant the tree before the fall freeze. The tree is about 7 feet tall and is in a 5 gal pail with good soil at this time.
Planted now existing roots can elongate for good establishment before winter, majority of root lengthening occurs in fall. However, if potbound roots should be opened up and straightened out at planting. Either way, consistent watering critical after planting, also be sure to mulch well. If drainage beneath added soil adequate no need to put on more. If there is some question then add more topsoil, enough to keep roots above water table at all times, including unusually wet ones - cherries CAN be quite touchy about drainage.
Thanks Ron, It is raining fairly well here right now but as soon as the monsoon ends I intend to get the tree in the ground. I am using a root stimulant the nursery here suggested and am digging down 2.5 times the depth of the pot and 3 times the width. Will amend the clay soil I have here with some of my garden loam.
