Hi there, I have five "meteor" sour cherry trees about 8yrs old that are not flowering. The buds that open in early spring are leafs so I end up with trees that have foliage but no bloom. What am I doing or not doing that is causing this? I usually fertilize with sheep manure but stopped 2 years ago. This is the third year that this happens. Please could someone advise on some possible reasons. Many thanks Alister
Some things that may happen to other kinds of trees and shrubs (Don't know if all are possible with your cherry trees in your location): - Too much shade - Winter cold killing flower buds but not leaf buds - Birds eating flower buds They bloomed before but stopped three years ago? Or they never have bloomed?
Maybe the organic nitrogen from the manure caused late growth that did not harden off in time causing winter injury?
Yes, that would be another one: pruning the flowering wood off. But you'd have to be really whacking them to cut off every cluster of flower buds.
Hi There, Many thanks for the responses. I have never pruned the trees. I was always happy with the way they were growing anyway. The trees flowered and bore fruit (lots and lots) the two years I had them. Birds are not eating the fruit buds (I watch over them like a hawk). This is pretty much my pest control routine: I spray with horticultural oil dormant in fall. In early spring before any growth again spray with horticultural oil dormant and sulfur. Mid summer I usually am attacked by those red dot spider mites so I use a little malathion or sulfur. Thanks so much for your kind attention. I really appreciate it. Alister
