I planted a cherry tree in 2000, and finally had fruit this year which was great. My problem now is that last night a few of our cows got into our yard and broke my tree. Two of the large branches are now lying on the ground, they are barely attached to the main stem. Is there a way that I can root these rather large branches to start new trees, or do I have to try to support them and sort of graft them back on. I am very new to the gardening/fruit tree stuff. What could I possibly do, I am in a panic.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Saw them the rest of the way off and continue on with what is left of tree.

    cherry tree rooting

Is there some way to get branches to "root" so I could possibly start new tree. I was thinking of putting them in water, or should I put them in peat or soil? I hate the idea of just throwing the broken branches away. How else do you start a new tree yourself? Determined to save what I can. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Orchard cherries (sweet, sour, morello) are propagated by grafting. Your broken branches are a loss.

Thank you for the reply. I am haveing trouble letting go. Maybe I should look at trying to propigate or graft. I'm a little stubborn I guess. Is it to late in the season to graft? My mom was wanting to try something to help as well.

you could air layer the broken branches as long as you can brace the broken area long enough to get some roots say a foot above the broken area. and that all depends on if there is enough cambium in tact to feed the plant long enough to root. but thining some of the smaller stems and branches may make it able to live long enough to root so that way you get to try an air layer and cuttings i have only had nanking bush cheries live for about five years here in my part of florida and only ever got one flower on one plant that never made fruit it just up and died one spring it never broke dormancy. i did try to graft some pieces to a plum that later died from to much water i lost allot of plants that year. but the grafts never took anyways. i was not sure what they where compatable with and my grafting skills where laking i am better at it but still not all that sure what they are compatable with accept cherry.
