I have a beautiful cherry blossom tree in my front yard. We have been advised by city workers, of all people, that this beautiful tree threatens our underground utilities! They have indicated to me that the strong root system of the tree, could strangle out and eventually pull our utilities (phone, hydro, cable) thus damaging them. From my research, I thought cherry blossom tree roots were quite shallow (in fact ours were coming up through the ground in a few spots) Our utility lines would seem to be approx 3' down.
The last thing I want to do is cut down this tree, but I need to know if anyone thinks it may interefere with my utilities.

    Any help would be appreciated

Japanese flowering cherries often grafted onto sweet cherry (Prunus avium), which does have a conspicuous tendency to wreak havoc when planted on streets. To get another opinion about the situation with your yard tree, hire a consulting arborist or other expert.
