Thanks Luke, but it's 32°C here atm, they will need a lot of misting later. By torch light tonight I think, as its going to be hot until quite late it appears. lol

Just been outside making sure my maples are nice and cool, which of course they are not. Moonrise has had quite a lot of sun Over the last week and has coloured up really nicely.

I just found out that nursery I got this from grows Acer sieboldianum. Does anybody think it could be from that family?

It is closely related to Palmatum, Shirasawanum, Japonicum and circinatum. The late Peter Gregory has done an informative article on this online.

Just recently moved this to it's new spot on top of the south facing patio , lots of sun and lots of deeper red edgings on the leaf ,really likes it's new position should look stunning in the fall.

Sorry about the photos, but misting and taking photos at the same time is not a good choice Lol

I'm happy to say I edited and revised (with some expert help!) Peter's article, which can be found at this link directly on the OSI: https://maplesociety.org/sites/default/files/sieboldianumGregory-vf.pdf

Your plant does look like it might be sieboldianum on the surface. Check out the leaf undersides, and the scars from the bud scales, lacking flowers this is the best indication. But it is difficult to ID this maple with complete surety without many years of observation since it is very close to pseudosieboldianum. A friend who is the retired director of one of the most important botanical gardens in EU-land is still struggling with this, just to give you an idea.

I often try and take a picture of our Siebold's Maple in autumn, because it's close to the house and visible from the upstairs hallway. This one from 13 Oct 2019 isn't really peak, but I love this tree anyway.
    IMG_20191013_130401.jpg

I took the dogs out for a pre-kibble visit to the Aceretum this evening, they did their thing and then bolted for the house; I saw some motion, and thought the flash of brown was the cat pouncing, continued walking and: a full-sized white tail stood up in front of me, she had been sleeping in the long grass. I called the young dog Samantha, while the doe just stood there, finally she ran off when Samantha showed up. Sam was so kibble-obsessed she didn't even bother to chase the deer. Faw, useless beast. Tomorrow I'm cutting that da*ned grass. No visible damage, anyway. Sometimes...

Good morning Emery, what a difficult night that was for sleeping. But I awoke to the beautiful photo you posted of your Siebold's maple. 'Lovely' '
Re Peter Gregory; a sad loss, but articles by him are still there and will always be there for everybody to read thanks to the internet. So his legacy lives on.
The white tail deer you saw are so pretty, such a shame they do so much damage.......
Keep cool as you can today
