Cheering ourselves up with Maples

Even St Paul’s cathedral has its own maple! Taken yesterday trudging around London in torrential rain!

 

I'm probably wrong R, but I thought it was a Liquidambar styraciflua.

 

I don't know if I can find them again, but I took pictures of very nice Acer palmatums at the bottom of the stairs of the Museum of Natural History (you know, next to the V & A and the Science Museum).

I also spotted what looked like a a "plane", I mean an Acer pseudoplatanus near the Tower of London, and I think it's a variety that is registered, somewhere.

 

Good evening everyone, I have just removed the Shirazz photos thread from the cultivar photos and placed all the messages under this thread.
Acer palmatum 'Gwen's Rose Delight' or 'Shirazz'
This was as a request from a well respected member this evening.
So if I can ask for any new photos of Shirazz to be referred to as the correct name of 'Gwens rose delight', it would help in keeping the correct name on the forum.

Good morning, I do try and keep my postings each day topical and about maples I've seen talked about the previous day or so on the forum. So here are a few from moments ago in my garden, starting with Gwens Rose Delight or Shirazz, Acer palmatum, Emerald Lace, Jerre Schwartz, Ogi tsuma gaki, Miss Piggy, Iigima Sunago and Beni Maiko.

Funny enough we also went to the Tower of London on Friday, I didn’t spot the tree you mention but I did notice that they have planted a row of about 6 or so Japanese maple cultivars under tall tree cover at Leicester Square..it will look really good in 20 years.

 

Strange that it’s on Mr Maple’s retail website named Shirazz!!!

 

Yes I know R and a lot of others. But as was pointed out to me yesterday, it is a sales gimmick and not the true cultivar name.
I think as time goes by on this forum, we will get all the true cultivar names used and that will help so many from doubling or even trippling up. I will still show a photo of mine as Gwens Rose Delight or Shirazz, so as to not remove the synonym. As you say everyone recognises this.

A focus on foliage today. First up is the new growth on my little Osakazuki - love to see so much variety in new leaves on a single tree:



Next up, the weird/interesting 'autumnal' colouring on my big Osakazuki. I'm guessing the recent hot weather has stressed it and it's not very happy.



Finally, my impostor. It was sold to me as a Phoenix, it has a tag that says Phoenix, I... have some doubts (but it's very pretty whatever it is. Last year it had some BRIGHT pinks that were just breathtaking, and it's colouring up nicely this year too)

Possibly 'Orido nishiki'/'Oridono nishiki' or even 'Asahi zuru' or maybe one or two others with similar variegation. Either way nice palnt and a little mystery to observe over time.

 

I agree with M @maf possibly an Oridono nishiki or Orido nishiki. Leaves look a little too large for a Phoenix IMO.

 

You keep on outdoing yourself Xi-feng, beautiful as always.

 

I think a squirrel must have made a deposit in one of my JM pots..

@AlainK would this be useful bonsai material? It has interesting nebari developing already..it’s about 20cm

 

Thanks @maf and @Acerholic -- I'd wondered if it might be Oridono Nishiki but hadn't considered Asahi Zuru. Off to go haunt each of those threads to compare the pics with my little tree - again, what a wonderful resource we have here!

Thank you @Keith Elliott - my job keeps me busy during daylight on weekdays, but I look forward being able to get out into the garden on those weekends and see what's happening out there!

Found another D..the leaves are slighter more pointed rather than rounded ends..I’m not sure whether it’s the same type..any idea?

Acer Circinatum

 

Good, morning, a bit of moisture in the air here in Southern England, so I thought a few ghosts for the thread today.

Sister,Grandma, Uncle, First,Purple and finally Amber. My Baby ghost still isn't worth a photo, but maybe next week.

 

.. and they are not variegated.

 

Almost any tree can be worked as bonsai. I've seen pictures of very nice ones, but I don't have any, just a couple of seedlings that I don't think I will keep. I find them too difficult to work with ;-)

The second one is too young to make a definite opinion on what species it is. There are several varieties or species or oak that are planted as street trees here, one of the most popular is probably Quercus rubra (chêne rouge d'Amérique, northern red oak) that has flamboyant autumn colours but tends to become invasive is some forests...
