Good morning, yes this is a great forum, I only accidentally tripped across it last year. It’s great to see and hear how people do things differently, after being in Japanese maple isolation for 20years!
I wrapped probably 60% last night, wrapping 3/4 in one go rather than individually, no frost this morning..but we’ll worth an hours effort!
I found a plastic trampoline cover that fits my dark purple Tamukeyama perfectly, I think it’s that, I lost the name card some years ago.

Wow, beautiful tree. Love the silhouette. Looks like a "bonsai" but in larger form. The trunk is beautifully shaped.

ohhh no..hope the collateral damage is light..they predicted a low of 2C here..but didn’t want to chance it. That’s my oldest JM, had that for nearly 20 years, it’s about 5 foot high and 6foot across..I moved it from the ground where it was getting too much sun 2 years ago into a massive pot..and very happy where it is..I need to clear up that area of my garden..it’s the junk and potting zone

Hi AlainK, but both beautiful. Light conditions for photography is so very important. You could easily pass for two different trees. Talking about thirsty, we have all gone from one extreme to another; now everything is bone dry.

Last year, I feared it was a goner. Today, with a "crab apple" that flowered two weeks ago in the background, and in comparison to early risers, you might think it's dead :

    acer-gris01_200416a.jpg

But like last year, Acer griseum is the one that wakes up late (maybe I should use it as my avatar...) :

    acer-gris01_200416b.jpg

I also have an Acer triflorum, very similar except for the bark. It budded out rather late too, but almost two weeks earlier :

I suppose that like beech or ash, they sort of kept a genetic memory from the times they grew in much colder climates....

Hi AlainK, I'm so glad to see your stick or should I say Acer Griseum lol.
Ours is exactly the same and each year I panick but along comes May and off it goes.
Although this year I also have several palmatums that are doing nothing yet. It must be down to the very wet Winter.

Growing maples from seeds is such a, an adventure. I took photos of an 'Orange dream' from layering, turning green now, then I took a photo of a maple I grew from seeds in 2016-2017 or so that was next to it :

An adventure but so exciting as you never really know what you will get.
That is a a lovely Orange Dream.

I dont know if you saw the post from Atapi on Orange Dream location, his Orange Dream was 7ft x 7ft. Big or small it is a wonderful cultivar that has an effervescent glow.

Hi LoverOf Maples, photo taken when they are just waking up, lovely!! I especially like Kawaii, I've also seen it on Amazing Maples and can see why it is liked so much.
I'm also a sucker for Ariadne, I just compared it to my photo in my posting earlier today. Both at similar stages even though we are thousands of miles apart.
Thanks for sharing the great photos.

Hi Acerholic, thank you and others for posting so many beautiful pics of the JMs so far, I love seeing them. In Virginia, we have a warm late winter and early spring so most of mine are at the full opened stage and some even have changed their early opening color to the spring color. Here are a few of my collections (sorry for the jungle) and I will send some individual one later. These pics are from today with 52F sunny afternoon.

Hi Atapi, yes there are some wonderful photos on this thread from so many countries, really cheering people up I hope and your two photos tonight have cheered us up here in Southern England tonight.
Your maple arrangement is so colourful, you also have the benefit of large trees for extra shading for them which is perfect.
Thankyou and in anticipation of more from you.

In Northern Virginia this Spring, the weather in April is cool with sunshine and rain here and there somehow I think making the maples color brighter and stay a bit longer than other years. Here are a few 'ghost' families with red reticulated color showing a beautiful dark/purple red to cheer with you.

Hi Atapi, certainly has given cheer this morning. I love the Ghost series and all the reticulated cultivars; your Purple ghost is fantastic. Yes you are right about the colour, if the conditions are correct then they look so vivid. Thankyou for sharing these lovely photos.

@Atapi the design is looking fantastic. @AlainK very pleased your brooding A. sinense survived, some of the ones I gave away didn't and they were tetchy young. Great big leaves on them though. I find triflorum to leaf out among the first, while griseum is just starting to flower now.

Here are some more cheery pics from yesterday

thanks Alain, I’ll take my chances with the 3.30pm onward sun then, it was in a similar location to yours previously (full sun)but was getting unwanted attention from an animal nibbling it’s trunk..I have since observed a wood pigeon in the same spot biting chunks of tough ivy..so I think it might have been that was causing damage to my Orange Dream

Hi emery, very cheery indeed. I love 'Holata' the colour is amazing, also it seems suitable for a smaller garden.
You must love walking around your garden, 'so much interest'. You must do a video as Amazing Maples and ROEBUK have done. Not sure if you can put a video on UBC ?
