These were a small twig with a bit of root given to me by a friend in the Spring of 2003. It grew slowly and this year is in full bloom. The flower is a bright red, and is quite attractive. Apparently the plant produces a small fruit, which is ideal for jams.

Try again. It is just a web site, and I have never seen it fail, except for rare technical reasons.

Since it has habit and coloring like C. lagenaria but flowers look smaller and more cupped might be C. x speciosa - unless that always has large flowers as well (I don't think it does but would have to check). C. japonica as usually considered has a low, spreading habit and small flowers mostly in shades of orange.
