We have a 30 year old cedar tree that has four trunks. On three of these trunks it developed an afflection about three years ago that saw the tips of the leaves on individual branches turn brown. Within several weeks all the leaves on the affected branches would die. The tree is beside the ocean. At first we thought the damage was being caused by salt spray as it is the side facing the sea that is most affected. However we have recently noted that there is a greenish grey mold like substance growing on the trunks affected. The problem seems to be escalating and we are now afraid of losing the whole tree. The only things garden stores have been able to suggest is a lack of water but the tree seems to be well watered. Any suggestions as to what may be causing this problem will be appreciated?
