Recently we bought a house in Markham, Ontario and there are about 100 thuja cedars in the middle of the yard (I'm not sure about the type). I want to transplant them on the edges and beside the fence. I do not know the age of the trees but they are about 1 - 2.5 Inches thick and 5 - 8 feet tall. Here are my questions:
1: How deep the roots are?
2: Are they going to survive after replanting?

I would appreciate all the help and tips.

    Hi Mahi,

    Congratulations on your new home!
It's hard to say, but most tree roots are in the top 12" of soil.

Also hard to say. It would depend on how the transplant and after care is.

Trees that tall will have a very heavy rootball. With 100 to transplant you will definately need help. You will also probably need to rent a tree dolly. They come in different sizes.

Here's how to b&b (ball and burlap) the roots, transplant, water and mulch.

I'd be inclined to rent a guy with a small tree spade. Back hoe would be my second choice.

I like Ralph's idea too. I'm sure it would go alot faster and be easier on your back.
