we have approx. 300'x5'x12' of cedar hedges surrounding our backyard - they are 40 years old and have been taken very good care of - we noticed in the spring the side along a walking path into the school yard is going brown - that side is approx. 70' and it's 2x10' patches that are completely brown - the city asphalted the path last fall - just curious if anyone thinks the asphalt might be the culprit - if so I am going to try and go after the city

That sounds like the reason. Did they excavate at all on that side? Construction workers can be a problem around plants.

I would hire an I.S.A. Arborist to do a consultation with you.

My only concern is that the hedge probably encroaches upon the school's property? They could say the roots were on their land.

there was minor excavation - the hedge foliage encroaches into the path slightly - I trim it back each year, but the root balls are on my property on the other side of the chain link fence - thank you I appreciate the information and yes I am going to contact a local arborist
